- Setting the environment:
- Usually I like to go somewhere else entirely for a day or two. I’d book an AirBnB somewhere remote. New environments force creativity and focus. But life is busy at the moment and I didn’t plan ahead far enough.
- Block out the time. I recommend doing this all in one session. Normally it takes me 3-4 hours. Which may seem like a long time, but when you consider the fact that those 3-4 hours can make your next 3 months much, much better—it’s a tiny commitment.
- Zero distractions. You want to be in flow for this because you’re engaging in deep introspection and thinking. Anything that takes you out of that mode is the enemy.
- Tool: if you’re using pen and paper, then use pen and paper. If you’re using a digital tool (I’m using Notion), then use that.
- If you’re doing the review on your computer, block out distracting websites with an app like SelfControl.
- Coffee
Step 1: Journal & Brain Dump
Write a general summary of the last quarter, as if you’re describing the last 3 months of your life to a trusted friend. No need to structure it well. Dump all your thoughts.
Step 2: Review Questions
Time to get more specific. Spend time working through these review questions, being as detailed as possible. Go deep into introspection.
- Did I achieve the goals I set out for this quarter?
- What were the biggest wins?
